How Garage Door Safety Sensors Work

Since 1993, federal law has required all automatic garage door openers to include photoelectric sensors that prevent the door from closing when an object, pet, or person is in the path. These sensors create an invisible infrared beam across your garage door opening, typically 4-6 inches above the floor.

The System:

Sending sensor (one side) – Emits infrared beam
Receiving sensor (opposite side) – Detects the beam
Continuous signal – Both sensors must “see” each other
Interruption response – Door reverses if beam is broken

When functioning properly, if anything breaks the beam while the door is closing, it immediately reverses to prevent injury or damage. When sensors malfunction, the door either won’t close at all or closes unsafely.

Most openers indicate sensor problems with blinking lights – the number of blinks often indicates the specific error code.
